Hi guys, I'm new to this site but have been reading a lot of the threads since I bought my 87 vette this summer. I have found this site very helpful and finally registered! My problem is that my car is not running that well (rough start, hesitation) but I am unable to get any codes from the car. Previous owner had removed SES light, I replaced it but it will still not turn on when I jump the diagnostic connector. The other telltale lights work like security, hatch, battery etc. I have no idea where to go from here. Happy Holidays and I look forward to hearing your input.
Get a Field Service Manual for your 87. That will help you tons.
It will allow you to fish instead of being given fish.
My 93 manual has a section on diagnosis of the Service Engine Soon Lamp. I bet the 87 does too. It should light up in bulb test as you noted when you jump the terminals.
You should confirm service light is working. Light should come on while cranking, or with key in "run" position, engine off. I agree, you should get a FSM (not Chilton's, etc) if you plan to keep your car. Even if you do not do your own work, it will be a reference you can show to the person who works on it. As these cars get older, there are fewer techs who are familiar with them.
