Default 84 engine replacement

Have an 84 and am considering putting a higher HP crate engine in it for more fun. Anyone out there with a recommendation on an engine that would make an easy swap?

What is your budget? Goals?
If you are looking to just replace it you can drop in any old SBC.

There is plenty you can do with an 84, but you need to let us know how much you paln to spend and what you expect for performance. Also, emmissions (depending on where you live) and computer function come into play as well.

Is the car an auto or 4+3?

I'd be happy to talk with you about this but I'm off to Kansas City at 3AM to go pick up my "new" C5. I can PM you my # if you want to call this weekend, or PM me yours and I'll call you.

Actually I got it in July.

I was trying to be helpful to someone who was getting smart-*** remarks instead of the assistance he was asking for.

Just because it's the 1st Corvette I've had doesn't mean I'm a rookie ya' know. I've been a die-hard car guy for 29 years and I've learned a lot in that time. I'm always happy to help someone who has a legit question - and most of the time I see that you are too. Your post kinda loses me.

Hey Marc,

Did I read you got a new C5? Congrats.

You should make your yellow vette a track car now.

I'm totally confused......

I thought you had built a Vette engine....I was curious as to see what you did to your '84 as I have an '84...

If you've not built one, then I am sorry for mis-stating anything.....I just had hoped you had some pics or info....

Some of us are having fun but he is getting help. Mike's idea is my next build provided I have the funds.

I have an idea, why don't you donate your 84 to the cause?
You should have more money than Elvis by now.

Thanks for a serious reply as it appears this thread got taken over a little. I haven't set a budget but am trying to decide if I want to add a super charger to my 2001 A4 'vert and make it more fun to drive or instead replace the engine in my stock 54,000 mi '84 with a crate engine that would take the HP from just under 200 to more like 400. Its an automatic and should be pretty quick and fun to drive with 2X HP. The supercharger install on the C5 would be about $7,000 and I would want to stay under that if I did something on the '84. I don't know how easy a LS1 swap in the '84 would be so I was looking for advice on an easy swap that would work. Thanks to all that gave serious replies!

The problem you'll have with a 400hp engine in the 84 is with the computer. For it to ever run correctly, you'll have to go to an aftermarket solution and tune it via laptop. I've been sternly warned about this by the guys making the Renegade. Their suggestion was to go with a more mild engine - in the 300-325 hp range - and be happy with that. Since I'm in California the aftermarket computer would kill any chance of passing smog.

Hey Mike, yep I got the $$ and yep, I got sweet C5. Our lease is up in February and I'm already looking for a nice duplex.

I'm not going to keep the 84 though - I have too many other things going on and it would just sit. besides, the C5 is just amazingly great to drive!

Even of thread derailment

IMO, if your looking for around 400hp I would go the route of the 383 for starters. Cost vs Cost of a 383 and LS swap, with the 383 you'll be money ahead.
The most important question is are you sticking with the CFI intake or doing something different?

For example, my 84 has been converted to the Holley Stealth Ram and I tune it using dynamicefi's ecm. (I have a pretty long thread with tons of photos on the conversion, and no hacking of the wiring is needed). With that conversion a 268H cam and Patriot heads (yes some other stuff to) on the 350 block the car is amazing. I'm in the process now of putting in a 388 roller, so it will get even better in the fun department.
