Code 36 help...
I keep getting an intermittent code 36 on my 89 L98. I have the modified MAF sensor (screens cut out) that is less than a year old. I also have two new MAF burn-off relays (less than 6 months old). After I download the fault and clear the code, it stays away for a few days and then comes back. There are no other codes and no detectable decrease in the performance of the car. I suspect the modified MAF is my problem as I never had this code pop up before. Could it be that the filament is getting dirty and the burn-off relays aren't keeping up? I don't notice any build up but I understand it wouldn't take much. Is there a way to isolate the MAF or a way to troubleshoot the MAF system? Thanks in advance to all who respond.

It does the burn off function after shut down. It is not clear to me how the ecm knows to set 36, but guess is that it monitors this circuit for current and if no current during a commanded burn off function 36 will set.
Only other active device is the MAF power relay! This is also part of the burn off circuit and why many folks recommend that you replace both relays.
Otherwise everything else is just wires and connections. Seems either a short or an open (bad connection) could cause a 36.
Final thing to check is that you have the correct relays in both the power and burn-off locations. I would buy only GM for this as there is lots of confusion about the proper relays, and changes were made over the years.
