What kind of helmet do I need for going to the drag strip, M2000 or SA2000? Any additional info anybody could give me in this area would be helpful. Thanks guys.
For road racing you have to have a Snell 85 or better. I would recomend a snell 2000 rating. That way you can use them for both. I just bought one last week for $139 full face vented. Found out the hard way when a friend of mine showed up at the track with a snell 85 Motorcycle helmet. The tech guy said no go....

I called, this helmet is only M2000 rated, I think I want an SA2000 rated. I don't think that my car is going to crash, but you never know what the guy next to you will do.
Get a SA2000 rated helmet. That way you are good for any type of competitive event like track days or autocross. The SA rating means that the helmet line has Nomex for fire protection. The current SA2000 rating will be good until 2010. Not sure, but I think the SA rating is also for multiple impacts and the M is single-impact.
Somebody here said that if you have a $10 head, get a $10 helmet. I couldn't afford the $600 helmet that I wanted, but that was a good piece of advice
At California Speedway a Z06 was turned away when the guy's helmet was M2000. Get an SA2000 and you will be good for anything for the next 10 years. A cheap investment. I don't know if they would turn me away but they have always checked my helmet.
well, I ordered one last night. I went to http://www.pyrotect.com/index.shtml (510-536-2355) But I got a SA95 helmet because they were on close out. I got a Bell Vortex FA helmet, full kevlar which retails for ~$850 for $200 with second day shipping. It was a deal that I just couldn't pass up. It won't last me as long as the SA2000 but it should be good for a few years atleast, right?
SA helmets are for auto racing, M helmets are for motorcycles. M is required for autox. Most road races require SA.
There are three main differences:
1. The SA helmet frequently has a reduced field of vision since they do not have to be DOT approved
2. The SA helmet is fire resistant. They have nomex interiors as opposed to nylon
3. The SA helmet is designed to withstand, without compromising safety, multiple small impacts, such as head against roll bar in a turn.
If you are road racing, get an SA helmet. If you are autocrossing, the only real danger is hitting your head on the car from small forces such as turns. You are most likely not going to stop suddenly by hitting another car or a concrete wall. A M rated helmet is more than adequate.
