Default Taurus 2-speed Fan Install

... Thanks to a recent post , I decided to investigate the Taurus two speed fan upgrade on my '87 vette .For those of you who are as unaware as I was , the Taurus fan supposedly flows 2700cfm on low and 4000cfm on high speed . I found one at the local pick-n-pull junkyard for just under $25 out the door .
... A few years ago I tried a Flexalite Cyclone 16" that was rated at 2500cfm ... it turned out that the stock fan did as well if not better so for the sake of simplicity , the stocker went back in .
... The reason I brought up the Flexalite is because it became the donor for the mount for the Taurus 2 speed fan ... check it out ... the missing grate pieces were removed for mounting clearance on the car ... the Taurus motor is a 1/4" larger in diameter than the Flexalite so I cut out the center of the mount with a saw-tooth dremel bit .
... This write-up is forensic since I had to find out if it would work and didn't think to take photos beforehand ...

... Next , I cut the center out of the original Taurus mount/shroud to use for the screws to attach both parts together .....

... Then , after filing a bit off the insides of the screw bosses for clearance , I sandwiched the pieces together and bolted it all up .....

... I will post a follow-up on evaluating the performance of this set-up as soon as the outdoor temps give me a realistic way to quantify the results ...............

....... I already have a separate 40amp relay wired in from when I used the Flexalite fan ... I will run the low speed off the factory relay through the normally closed terminal and high off the NO term on the aux relay with the ECM wire and full-time toggle switches attached to both ...

Default Taurus fan install

Can you specify what year model taurus to source for the fan. Is it a specific year only or a range of years? Thanks

As I understand it ... we're looking for '95-'98 ... the later ones seem to have dual fans with a primary and secondary ... Some Mustangs may have also used the two-speed fan/fans ... just google Taurus Fan for some interesting reading ... Mine came out of a '97 ... It helps a lot if you have a pick and pull style junkyard that you can hunt in and get measurements and compare shrouds and such ... I had a mounting frame that I knew would fit the Corvette and didn't have to modify the factory shroud ..... STAY TUNED ..................

........... Two speed Taurus fan update ..... this thing is awesome ... I run the fan on low speed ( about the same flow as factory ) at all times ... I have a three position toggle switch with down for low , middle for off , and up for high ... anyway , on the low speed setting the car generally runs around 184* in traffic , upper 160*s on the interstate ..... During spring break , I was trolling the beach in bumper to bumper traffic 88* air temps and let the engine temp creep its way up to 200* ... this is with low speed fan running ... then I turned it to high speed and within 2-3 minutes ... still in traffic ... the temp had dropped to 178*... I get the same results in drive throughs ..... between rounds at the track it takes about 20 seconds on high speed , engine off , to get ambient air temps through the radiator ..................... No concerns about turning on the AC in traffic anymore ... this is great !

I'm pretty sure Crown Vics used the same fan. I'm running one on my truck and it sounds like a Turbo Prop on high speed.

I triedto do that a couple years ago. Could not figure out a way to mount it that would not look like a hack job so I gave up. You did better than me.

..... I'm sure there is ... but I shopped at the local LKQ pick-n-pull junkyard ..... The Taurus has a 16inch blade ... same as the vette ... the Crown Vic / Grand Marquis has an 18 incher ............ the Ford shrouds could be hacked in ... if carefully done , it wouldn't necessarily be all that obvious ...... Happy Hunting ! ..... Cop car fan motors are heavy duty , meant for long term continuous duty .......................

The fan is from a 1990-1995 3.8l Taurus, sable, and lincons. Ive used it, and they are awesome. On my trans AM on low standing a foot in front of the car with the fan on low, you can see my leg hair being sucked toward the fan. It works great.

Can you make another step by step thread including wiring/switches? This would be a great upgrade. Thanks in advance
