Default Dampener removal

Hey I'm replacing the front crank seal and am wondering if it's easier to remove the dampener by moving the steering rack or by unbolting the mounts and raising the engine?

If I do the rack will I need an alignment?

It's a 8 + 6 rib AT1. 7 1/2" I think..
Thanks
Eric

Have you figured out which way will be easier? What year are you working on? I have a 93 and will be replacing my timing chain, gears, seals, gaskets and installing a 6-rib ATI super damper. Let us know how it works out.

LT-1; P-1SC Procharger 8 PSI with intercooler & FMU, 24LB Bosch Injectors, 1.6 RR, Edelbrock performer heads and Air Gap Intake, MSD Pro Billet Opti with super coil and wires, NEX plugs, stock bottom end and tune.

I've done it a couple times. I've never loosened the motor. I just loosen up the rack. My front main seal is also leaking so I may be doing this in the future. I hate removing the damper. I've done it at least 4 times now.... I have the 8+6 now.

Thanks Qwik,

Do you you take the dampener off as one piece or separate it? Do I need to take the hydraulic lines off the rack, if so will I screw up the steering wheel position?

Cheers

Got the dampener off. I disassembled the dampener from the hub in situ, moved the steering rack to get the dampener off, then used the bolt pattern on the hub as anchor points for a conventional puller for the hub. With the bolt selection available to me I could only get 2 bolts in an usable position on the hub ( I would have much rather used 3). A little bit of localized heat and some elbow grease and it finally came free. I've got the timing cover off now and it looks like it may have been the shaft seal for the opti that was the leaky culprit.

When I had to remove the damper, I always just removed the bolts from the steering rack, nudged the front tires in on each side, this would push the rack forward a bit, making it "easy" to get the damper off...

I would replace all the seals in the timing cover while you have it apart and check your timing gears... make sure if you change the timing set you make sure everything is lined up so you are not off a tooth... It is worth checking while you have everything pulled down...

Thanks Mo,

All back together with all seals replaced.... No leaks yay! I checked the timing gears they looked pretty good so I left them alone.

Cheers
