Rattling upon starting
I bought an '88 Corvette last November. Sometimes upon starting, it makes a rattling noise for a couple of seconds which is irritating and may be an indication of larger issues. Seems like it may be the starter gear getting caught in the flywheel. It also seems like if I time it just right and let go of the key, i.e., quit cranking, right before the engine actually starts, then it doesn't make the noise. I wonder if the starter may need cleaning and/or greasing, replacing, or if there may be some kind of adjustment such as putting in shims to get the clearances right between the starter and flywheel gears. I thought about taking the starter off but it seems to crank fine, and I was afraid that checking it off the car might not show anything.

I think you are on the right track with starter shims. Did the car just start making this noise or do it since you bought it? If it just started check the bendix on the starter motor. It may be getting dirty too. If an auto pull the fly wheel dust cover and replace the starter. Then you can see what is going on .
