Hey guys. Im Arnold. I just got my first corvette last week. Its a 1987. Quick question....when i start it it wont start unless i give it a little gas and once it starts i have to give it a little more gas to keep it running but after that it runs great. Is this a concern or is it normal because of the age??
Sounds like your cold start injector is not working. The injector is connected to the bacck of the fuel rail to the bottom of the runners on the drivers side of the motor.
If you can get your hands of a fuel gauge, attach it to the fuel rail (engine OFF). Then turn the key on and watch the pressure build....
1) does the pressure hold y/n
2) if the pressure drops quickly to zero within a minute then check fuel regulator and fuel pump
3) Do you know when the last time the fuel filter was changed?
Get back to us with more information when you can.
Thanks for the advice! I dont know when or if the fuel filter has been replaced. It has 60300 miles on it right now. The car was kind of slugish the first couple of days but its running great now.. i think it sat for a while. As a precaution im gonna change the oil and transmission fluid, change the spark plugs and replace and belts or hoses that look cracked or dry rotted...i also need to replace the weather stripping on the rear window.
I had the same problem with my 87. It only had 58,XXX miles when I got it. What helped mine was changing the fuel filter and removing and cleaning the throttle body. The throttle body passages were gunked up with carbon. Good luck with your vette. I have had mine a few years now and I have have been taught a great deal by the folks on this forum... Welcome and enjoy

Welcome to the forum. A lot of times, a gunked up throttle body will not let air past the blades and the motor will not start without some pedal. Remove your intake hose up to the throttle body, open the blades manually and squirt some throttle body cleaner in there. Use a toothbrush and you should get most of the gunk out. Squirt again, put everything together and start it up. The motor will smoke for a short while, but hopefully you problem will have cleared up. Willie
Thanks! Im off tomorrow so ill probally go outside nd give that try. This forum is great. This is the first time on the forum but i know how helpful it is because my stepdad was on here a lot when my mom had her '73 so i ws excited to be able to get on here
For old times sake, here's a pic of the former '73 with me floggin it down the track at Cecil County Dragway. I won top eliminator that day. 13.30 @ 103
Things I have learned from my 87 over the last 3 years:
1) Replace the injectors with ones from F1C
2) Clean the TB and the Intake (took 3 cans of Carb cleaner)
3) Suck out the Brake and Steering Fluid and replace
4) Replace Brakes and Rotors
5) Start scouting for a Field Service Manual
6) If the tires are old then replace them before they shred
I love my 87 more than any car. Everyday is a joy to ride it and Every weekend is a joy to fix something.
