Need help in ignition system troubleshooting. Car was running fine. Pulled into garage shut off engine. Next time I tried to start it it would not start. I have checked for codes and there are none. I checked for spark on a few plugs with a timing light and found some have spark and some do not. Whould that be the distributor?
Thanks in advance
Mike
It could be the CATS system. Once the key and ignition get old, the connection deteriorates and the car doesn't read the key. You can try using electrical connection cleaner in the key hole.
If it is still a problem you can buy a new ignition and key blanks. Probably around $200. There are a number of CATS bypasses available. They are like $20.
Does the engine turn over or does the key do nothing? If the key does nothing (like the battery is dead even though you can tell its not) then it is the VATS (CATS was a typo) - Vehicle Anti-Theft System
If you are positive you have spark at some plugs, but not all then it is an ignition problem, neither fuel nor VATS. An opti does not usually fail like you are describing so I would check the coil and the ICM in that order, and the opti last.
Check for spark to all cylinders, write down which ones don't have spark,& check for injector pulse. On the cylinders that do not have spark, pull the spark plug(s) & inspect throughly & post a pic if possible. Also check fuel pressure.Write that down as well.Post results here. Also verify that security light is not flashing while starting the car
