Default Professional Products damper ?....

Hi,

I have just finished my Timing Set/ Harmonic Balancer replacement.

As for the balancer I ordered a Dorman 594012S but in the Dorman package was a Professional Products damper.

It looks fine and I installed it but I was wondering if Dorman sells repacked Professional Product dampers.

They used to have a bad reputation, but I hope I will be fine as I have a mostly stock L98.

Any comments?
Thanks

Hm...that sucks big time....
I will have to keep an eye on it. Can´t send it back as that would be to expensive from Germany.

I wanted to get a higher quality than the 30$ stock units.....just for my PEACE OF MIND!!! Should have bought the 27 $ standard replacement.....

Is there any danger in keeping it on?
I´ll have an extra eye on it. Changing it is not the problem as I now have the tools and the job was quite easy, but I would hate it to buy another one now.

Btw. heating the damper in a pot of hot water (damper in plastic bag) made the installation a breeze.just FYI

Keep an eye and an ear on it. He used the "SFI approved" damper and it slipped right off after a short period. Think he said it sounded like a knock.

I think you'll hear it before any damage is done.

Hmm...ok I will give the damper a chance. As far as I can see it is the 80000 series.Don´t know if SFI approved or not.
My engine mostly sees everyday driving and seldom high revs over 3.5K.

Maybe it holds up for a while....
Thanks

Well, I've had my PP balancer on the engine now for almost 4 years with no problems, BUT, now that this thread has scared the hell out of me I will be watching it. Really, my balancer has been fine on my 383 that I beat hell out of.

After everthing I read/heard about PP dampers, I refused to mount mine. I sent mine back and paid more to upgrade. I doubt it's SFI comliant as NONE of the other 80000 series are. (Basically, that means it's not proven to last at very high rpms.)

I even had to pay a restocking fee to the buttheads (CNC-Motorsports) who didn't know other dampers would fit a C4 vette. Bottom-line: I won't use PP balancers, nor will I use CNC-Motorsports again. (FWIW, CNC-Motorsports didn't even know if there was another brand of 6.5" balancer for ext balance motors -- even though I later learned they carried them. And, they charged me restocking for an upgrade....Douchbags.)

Internal. Anytime you want info about a part for your motor go to Summit and look it up in their catalog. It gives lots of info about that particular part.

Ok, I just emailed RockAuto, where I bought the balancer.
They say I can send it back and get a full refund including shipping.

Needless to say, I will send it back once I received the replacement.

Any recommendations on a slightly - better-than-stock replacement?

I believe my PP balancer is going to be just fine but since this thread started it has placed some doubt in my mind. I was also looking at Summit's own brand of balancer but while comparing the Summit to the PP I saw a few similarities between the two. So, now I have to wonder who actually makes the ones Summit is selling as their own? I see no similarities with any of the other brands Summit carries but I also see absolutely no need for a $300.+ balancer. Personally, I am going to leave sleeping dogs lie.

Now that you say it, they sure look similar in some places....
Jesus this is tough....how hard can it be to find a decent damper without paying hundreds of $$$....

I hate it that everything is made in China nowadays. It would not be a problem if they at least TRIED to do a good job.

Maybe it won´t make a difference ar all if I change the PP damper now. Chances are the next one is als China crap.
I just don´t want to spend 200+ for a balancer on a stock motor.

I picked up a set of there Aluminum RR
a few years ago the needle bearings destroyed there horrific hardened fulcrums & the Poly locks chipped on the edges....

Its stock, not seeing over 3500 rpms id imagine any balancer would work fine. Stick it on, if it ever started to go bad youd feel it/hear a knock.

I hope so, but it still gives a bad feeling the way it is now....

But with the cheaper ones it seems like a gamble anyway.

Guys, I originally bought this SCAT damper as I'd also heard bad things about PP:
SCA-D-80000
After I got it I thought, well this is the PP damper I was trying to avoid (the 80000 in the part number should have been a clue!). I finally went with the Fluidampr:
FLU-670100

Like I said, I beat on my car quite often and the PP balancer has been on there for 3 maybe 4 years now with no problems. I emailed an ebay seller I bought my engine internals from, a great seller who will not sell junk. He said he has had "very few problems" with PP balancers and "for the money, are as good as your going to get".
I'm leaving mine alone but I will continue to watch it, like previous posters have said, if it starts to go bad you will hear it.
