I haven't heard about it lately, but a couple of years ago here in California, AV gas became a hit again for the ricers. A number of guys' got busted big time. If you going to run it don't advertise it. the issue isn't EPA if Federal Taxes and State road taxes not being paid. Very expensive bust.
I used to work in the aerospace industry, and I asked about using AV Gas in my car. Lots of the old-timers used to run the stuff in their old muscle cars, and they claimed they could light the tires up for miles. But when I asked the guys in preflight/flight test who actually refueled the airplanes, they all told me to stay away from it. AV Gas isn't as refined as the fuel sold at the local gas station. And even though the octane ratings are considerably higher for AV Gas vs. the commercially available stuff, it's lower refinement (one guy said AV Gas has a consistency similar to motor oil) didn't make it any better to use on the street or the track. I even asked some of the fuel system design engineers and they confirmed and they confirmed what the preflight/flight test personnel had told me.
I should mention, nobody said I couldn't use it... in fact they offered to fill my tank with AV Gas so I could see for myself. But after the discussions I had with everyone, I declined the offer.
Racing fuel, on the other hand, is a different animal. Between AV Gas and proper racing fuel, you're far better off with the racing fuel.
we ran both 98 Ultra unleaded and 100 avgas in my mates circuit racecar last season, mainly coz thats the 2 fuels they have at the track pump,
each meeting had qualifying and 4 races, we would run 2 races on unleaded and 2 with avgas, mainly to see if there was any difference,
there was no discernable difference to how the car ran, the lap times were always consistent no matter what fuel was in it,
we figured the lead in the fuel was probably kinder to the valves and combustion chambers but nothing else was gained from it, except the higher price of avgas.
I've been running 100 octane unleaded gas in my car for the last 6 years. It's a 13 to 1 motor in it right now. It is expensive and I buy it in a 55 gallon barrel at a time.
