Starting/running issues 93 LT1
See, I got my rebuilt ECM today and put it in, took it for a spin after charging the battery for about 30 mins, and it died on me after about 3 miles. I revved it up because I was feelin good, being back in the vette and all, and it stumbled to a stop, i tried to start it by dumping the clutch while in gear, and it tried to start at first, but then just pooped out on me. I sat in some guys driveway and tried to crank it for about 30 minutes, the starter would spin, but the car would not start. My dad came and jumped me off, the car ran fine for about 30 seconds and then had the same exact problem.
Got it home via a rope and expedition and jumped it off again, let it idle in the garage for about 5 minutes with no problems... gave it a few revs to 4k, no problems.
After some reading on the forums for similar threads, if i had to guess id say ICM and coil, not sure about how to diagnose them though.
any thoughts? TIA!
Car engines require spark, fuel, and cylinder compression to start and continue to run. You are missing one or more of these vital components. Lets start on page one of EVERY auto repair manual to find out what the problem is.
Use a timing light to see if you have spark during cranking. Unplug a plug wire and bring a grounded wire close to the boot during cranking to see if you have a snappy at least 1/2" spark. Connect a fuel pressure gauge to the shraeder valve on the end of the right side fuel rail and see if you have 35-42 psi and if it holds up for at least 1/2 hour ignition off. If you have rapid drop in pressure, you may have leaky injector/s or a defective fuel pressure regulator check valve. Spray starting fluid into the intake and see if the engine will start, if it does, you have a fuel delivery problem. Use a noid light (available at parts stores) on an injector wire on each bank during cranking to see if the injectors are being pulsed. Since the engine does run ok sometimes, I doubt you have a compression problem, but measure it anyway. It won't hurt either to put a can of dry gas in your gas tank, water in the gas won't allow good running either.
I charged the battery overnight last night, Could that have been my problem? low/old battery?
Im about to have it out again for a real drive to see if it dies
JFB: I tried to diagnose those problems with the tools i had the other day (none, as I was at my buddies house). I took a plug wire and put it up to a grounded wire while my buddy tried to crank it, no spark whatsoever. I cannot deliberate on the fuel, but the fuel pump can be heard when i turn the key.
I think that I should also note a few other problems that my car is having, detailed in this thread:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-t...r-problem.html
Ive come to the conclusion on that matter that the ECM is not the problem, i had it rebuilt and am still having the same problems.
