here it goes this may be a silly question but ..is there any way to determine if my ECM is my problem?? I'll list it again 1993 six speed coupe with all new ignition system excp. the ECM it really sounds like the prob.'s that quaser92blue listed.......so is there a way to test???
If the ECM detects a problem, it will report it by way of the codes. Some problems the ECM will not detect. i.e. No code.
This is where it gets difficult. The best approach would be to swap in a known good unit. Another approach would be to follow the factory service manual testing. The manual will be at least $100, new.
You should be able to get a used ECM out of a bone yard. They are generally easy to come by. If I have the correct info, the P# is 16181333. I am not sure if the memory is removable from these units. If not, you will need to get it reprogrammed for your app. Others on the board here will be able to help you with this. The program tells the ECM/PCM what the engine. trans, gear ratio, etc. is.
I think it should throw a code if the ECM is having trouble. Have you checked to see if there are any codes stored?
I never got any codes. I did force a code and got that. The GM Service Manual really wasn't much help for me. I would recomend buying it though. Lots of great information. The system is too complicated to go without it if you are going to be working on your car.
