Default Hood Lift Support

I recently bought an '89 Vette with the one lift support for the hood and wonder how much the lift support should support the huge hood, i.e., when it is released should it lift the hood up or is it supposed to just assist so that it catches on the bottom part of the lift once it is raised (like mine does).

Thanks in advance for any explanations.

Is only a assist device
Replace the one small strut at front of hood with two new ones ( one either side, bracket is there but no strut is fitted ) and feel the difference
Hood will self open from 1/2 way up

1/2 way up? really?

Must be some major differences in 87 to 90 hoods. I have an 87 with a 90 hood, using the 87 style mini rams at the hinge and it does nothing more than just stay up (90 hood normally uses the one long ram)..

May have to look into retro fitting the 89+ style because right now I am like the OP above, I lift it by hand all the way up and they support it from there.

Hoods are the same
Your '87 doesn't have the big gas strut used on the later cars ; your big strut is only a locking device

As mentioned, it's a 90 hood.. No locking device, just the mini struts used on 87, but the hood does have the mount for the single long strut, just the car doesn't.

I would not feel comfortable working under the hood without the locking long strut, be it either the 87 non assist or the 90 assist.

For what it's worth, I have the 90 style strut mounted to the early style lower bracket and the 2 little ones up front. As Rod said, half way up and away she goes.

Do you still have the 87 strut and hood bracket ?

It wasn't me that swapped hoods (car was an accident victim) but it stays up fine, just needs to be lifted almost all the way.. Will check into adding the 90 single strut.. Either way, not my thread, just was curious how you got a hood to go up on its own.

Both my `87 & `90 have to be lifted up by hand. On the `90 all I had when I got the car was the two little gas struts at the front of the hood because of the supercharger. I had to install an old `85 scissors type strut on the pass side because the little ones did nothing to hold up the hood. & they were new..
