Re: [Engine Bearings]: How hard to replace? / Suggestions? (scorp508)
Scorp, you're scanin' me here. Indeed if you go that far, you gotta pull the block and go .030", rings,..., but yes it would be a good idea. Then the motor is solid for another 150k+.
If not, at least replace that one-piece rear seal. It's only $20 and will be a pita once the tranny is back in. I've been told mine needs to be replaced and the flat rate comes to over $500.
Jim, the rear seal is being done. I ordered it today. :)
I dunno about the rings. Thats a whole lot more work & time than I am willing to burn up right now I think. Also I'm starting to run outta money in this budget. ;) The car honestly burns oil at what seems to be appropriate levels (about 1.5-2 quarts per 3500 miles including racing).
When the bottom end goes, it is 383 or larger time. I'm just trying to buy enough time with the 350 to save up for that bottom end and block work.
Re: [Engine Bearings]: How hard to replace? / Suggestions? (Torre)
I have always heared that you should never put new heads on a car with that many miles. I would go and buy a Gm 383 short block. Then you would be done with it. I think they make a short block? Just my .02 cents.

Well are you going to give me the $ to do that? :) I'm already stressing this project budget as it is. I am trying to just give my 350 enough life to last until i 383 or 396 bottom end is paid for and put together.
Where in the same boat. I just shelled out $3500 for the ZZ4 $1450 for the superam and 74219 cam. $105 for the Stewart water pump, $50 Afpr. $220 Svo #24. And I have to buy headers yet..Then the tranny will not take all the extra HP so that will go next $1100. Then the Dana 36 will be the next weak link. $1000 So far at this point $5320. Let me know how those headers you have bolt up. I am thinking that is going to be my next purchase. The funny thing is the wife only know that i bought the motor
Your car seems to be a Wednesday Car(Everyone was in a good mood, no hangovers etc). If it isn't broken, don't fix it. Like you've told me numerous times...when it DOES go, 383 time. Until then- H/C it and have a blast.

When I was around your age, I did the same thing you are doing now. Well, to make a long story short, I ended up with a lot of scrap steel.
If you can possibly go further down, do it. If you don’t, at the least, you are going to have to do all the work you are doing now over again to put all of your stuff on a new shortblock.
I learned from my mistakes and always build the bottom end as strong as possible. The top end is easy to change latter.
I just hope that everything holds up long enough for you to get the new short block in without damaging anything.
