The used Exotic Muscle headers I picked up are getting closer to being installed... but I have a snag or two.
The end of the driver-side header is hung up on what I think is the shift linkage that sticks out the side of the transmission.
Any suggestions? My instinct is to stick a shovel handle into the header and try to bend the pipes down enough to clear the lever, but sometimes instinct can be expensive.
Also, anyone have a link for a belt diagram for a 96 C4 LT1?
Simply remove the nut that holds the shift linkage to the shaft. Then pull the bracket off. It's a 17mm nut. Put the header in place and reinstall the bracket. The shovel handle doesn't sound too good.
The header is in place, but it interferes with the operation of the lever. Other than hacking an inch off the header and making the exhaust shop deal with it - are there other options?
I say - make it work, use the shovel handle, you gotta be able to shift the car.
Just try to get just a little bit at a time till it just clears. Dont go overboard.
When you have this type of problem go directly to the source...Call Exotic Muscle and ask them,Im sure they would know..But what ever you do, don't use the shovel handle, unless they say thats the way to fix it.........WW
Can the shift bracket be bent over a bit? I know my 87 (auto) the shift bracket and rubber bellows was a little closer to the new exhaust than I wanted but it would bend to the side easily
If bending the lever slightly will help give you the clearance, take it off the shaft, put it in a vice and bend it with a large wrench. Don't whack or shovel it when it's on the tranny.
Took a grinder to the DS header and removed enough of the flange to get shifting happy again. The PS header flange also hits the transmission, but not so much that it will prevent me from driving to the exhaust shop. The tolerances for these headers are tight, so welding on v-clamp flanges may not be a great idea... the guy who buys them from you is just going to cut 'em off again.
Since I'm getting real close to putting the belt back on - anyone know of a C4 LT1 serp belt diagram?
I don't have diagram for an LT1, but rarely ever use one for any car. You probably know this anyway, but if not, if the pulley is ribbed, the inside of the belt rides on it, if the pulley is smooth, the outside rides on it. If you start at the crank pulley, you can probably see the route as you go if you follow that rule.
Yeah, I just like having a picture, always assume I'm going to botch the belt.
Waiting for Amazon to ship me a couple of new plug boots so I can put angle boots on plugs 6 and 8... amazing that auto parts stores no longer stock stuff like this.
