I recently requested help with clearing a code in my '86 coupe. As usual, I received some helpful tips, but in general was directed back to basics. Service Engine Soon light was staying illuminated. disconnected the battery to reset the memory, no luck. (This is where I should have got a clue, but no). Replaced the battery (for a different reason) no luck with an extended power interruption. Tried unplugging the ECM pigtail at the battery, don't know why I should expect different results, but I did it anyway. Of course, no luck.
Duh, I must have a problem........Checked my electronic and paper manuals and both suggested an in depth visual inspection. (This is where common sense should have directed me to do this earlier, but no)
Found a disconnected plug at the air intake. Lesson learned?
1. Use common sense First, not last
2. Always start with the basics
3. Never waste other people's time asking for help if you have not done numbers 1 & 2 above.
Thanks to all

It is ok to ask for help and we have some very experienced members offering information. BUT.....a number of times I have found members asking for help, getting a step by step explanation to localize the problem and then the OP posts that they replaced this that and the other and the problem is still there. This is the dumbest and the most expensive way to repair a car. Take the help offered FIRST!!!!!
