Default Do Dymags break?

Just wondering if anyone has seen a Gen 1 Dymag break due to stress cracks? I'm in the process of refinishing a set, and was wondering if it is necessary to have them x-rayed or dye-tested, an fairly expensive operation. The car will see track duty. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, I don't know if they EVER break but I'm sure with enough stress or hitting a curb sliding sideways might break something. At any rate, thats the kind of work I do, I work in the Detroit, MI area if ya want them done cheaper. They would have to be super clean anyway ya go.
if they're painted then the paint would have to be removed to dye penetrant, x-ray(the most expensive) just need to be super clean. We also eddy current them(the cheapest process) just need to be clean and no loss or pealing paint.

When I first got my set of Gen I's and had them stripped, one of the wheels had a very small stress crack going radially outwards on one of the lips, it was very small, maybe 1/2" long. I showed it to a friend of mine who was an absolute welding master and he told me it was probably due to the material "setting" much like a typical casting. Anyway, he welded it up, lightly filed it, and soft wheeled it and then I had it refinished along with the other 3. You couldn't see the crack through the OEM paint so I suspect he was right and it had been there all along. I would just have yours stripped and look them over very carefully and if you don't see anything go forward and have them refinished. If you're still wanting to have them X-Ray checked it certainly wouldn't hurt anything except your wallet.

I would say it depends on whether or not the magnesium has had the opportunity to oxidize b/c of finish chipping off. That can weaken the metal.

I sent my Dymags to Ye Ol Wheel shop, they went over the wheels then refinished them. I know they were tested to 175mph
