I've been running Amsoil in mine for about 9 months. I can't say it's better than anything else, but it's certainly not worse.

Been using that in my '96 without any issues.

You could check with Bill Beaudreau at www.zfdoc.com. Don't have his phone # handy, but it is on the website and he is an authority on this trans.

Bill Boudreau with ZR51 Performance just told me this for my new trans.
"BMW Castrol TWS 10W-60 full synthetic oil (BMW P/N 07510009420). The factory fill oil is a 5W-30 standard grade motor oil.

WARNING: DO NOT use MOBIL-1 oil in this transmission!"

I don't know, I will ask him the next time we talk. If I had to guess it is something to do with the viscosity or formula.

I dont know this to be a fact, but I have heard that viscosty rating of motor oil and transmission oil is different. ie. the same weight motor oil as gear oil, the gear oil is thicker. Could just be a old wives tale.

For those desiring to try the AMSOIL Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) (Product Code MTFQT), please drop me PM so I can ensure you get it at dealer wholesale pricing, about 25% below retail, via the AMSOIL Preferred Customer Program.

If you hang around the racetracks, road race, drag strips, circle dirt

tracks in the pits - hang out with other teams and mechanics,

And take notice of every little detail going on around you at all times like I do..

You find out what works and don't for oils.

Guys here on C4 hate talking about oils for engines, transmissions, and rear differentials.

So I wont give any recommendations today.

If you drive like a little old lady on a Slow Sunny Day Sunday Drive in your Corvette........

Buying expensive oils is a waste of money for you........ Cheapest Trans oils will work just fine for you.

ZFDoc seems to me to be a pretty reputable source, and he recommends the BMW Castrol TWS 10W-60. About $8/qt from any BMW dealership. It's what I used when I changed the trans fluid in my '96, and shifts are smooth!
