Not sure if you have a L-98 or LT-1 engine there.

I know its a Corvette because you have Aluminum Cylinder heads.

Only Corvettes had Aluminum heads in that era or time frame.

If an L-98, thats the coolant temp sensor for the dashboard coolant temperature gauge.

Hi

It may be the coolant sensor for the aux fan, if it is the same as my 89, the dash sensor is on the other cylinder bank between 6 and 8

To check earth the wire with the ign on, if it is for the aux fan the fan will run if it is for the coolant sensor the dash gauge will go to max

89 was last year of Aux fan in front of radiator.

'90 + have dual fans on rear , both controlled by the ECM
In '90+ L98's , the hole in question had a blank plug with a square head

Correct location if it was a '84 - '86E engine

It is the correct type unit for the gauge ; just in the wrong location for your year model.
Maybe the heads have been off and they couldn't be bothered to remove the plug to swap over
Does wiring to it appear stock ?
What have you got in the same hole on pass side head between # 6 and 8 cyl ?

You may be right. I have an 87 vette with a MAF equipped TPI and star wars dashboard gauges.

I remember the dash coolant temp gauge wire on my 87 being a 16 gauge GREEN wire.

It looks like a knock sensor. That wire is bad. It has a plug on it.
I am going to replace mine and thats exactly what it looks like to me.

Sensor shown in post #1 looks nothing like a knock sensor
If fact ; with the single blade terminal it doesn't even look like the factory Aux fan switch
which has same style connector as the knock sensor

Have a look at your block , Pass side ,in front of starter and see if something like this is there

A KNOCK SENSOR

Very little about your '84 CFI engine is the same as a '91 TPI engine except for Chevy on the rocker covers
and the dist at rear

Who told you, your unit is a knock sensor?
Yours would be the only '84 with a knock sensor in the drv side head where every other '84 has the gauge sender unit?

No .
I correct people that put up miss-informed , bad or plain out wrong info.
Just because YOUR year model has something , doesn't mean another year does
Even worse when you make a blanket statement like you did that is wrong for ALL years`

Post up a pic of your knock sensor in your head to see if others agree with your opinion
