I've been looking for a set of shorty header to put on My L 98 so I can keep the front cats. I have an exhaust shop that is going to make a mandrel bent front y pipe with new cats. But I would like to know if anyone nows of a good header that fits and has the EGR pipe and air injection?
You know, IMHO, shorty's just ain't that much of an improvement over our stock manifolds. They are pretty good to start with. Not saying there isn't room for improvement tho.
Longtubes will actually allow for pre-cats. Just need a good muffler shop to work with you and fit them. I know your situation, I'm here in Ca too, and finishing up my exhaust mod/installation.
Truly Mandrel bent pipes? Which shop? Fellow forum member Raysur is looking for this service. He's in LA too. Mind if I pass that shop name to him?
Sorry I don't have any part # info on shorty's. Look into longtubes. You might be happier. Do a search here on the archives.
Keep us updated on your decision.
You could just pull the stock SS headers and port them. Cut off the AIR tubes and the EGR pipe that stick into the exhaust tubes (they're welded on the outside) and port the tube openings as much as possible (there is excess weldment) to more closely match the gaskets. Just leave enough weldment to hold the pipes to the mounting flange.
I think these will flow nearly as well as shorties and are much cheaper. Once you pull the stock exahusts you will see that they realy are shorty headers.
red90sixspeed bought a set of LT1 shorty SLP's. I think He noticed a pretty good gain, and they we're direct bolt in. Anything is better than the stock manifolds. Their openings are the size of peanuts.
For all the bother of installing Headers, and paying for custom exhaust work, i would reccomend coated long tubes as well, with mini-cats into a Y arrangement. I could have done this with My TPIS Headers, but found that maryland only requires a CAT, not 3. Passed inspection by mirror and rolling EPA test with flying colors. The TPIS have both items your looking for.
