One last thing I need for the stroker is a balancer. I don't want to spend the bucks for an ATI. Mine is not a racer. I do have concerns about the Pioneer. Although I've read a few posts here about them coming apart I've not read one from a person who's failed. This is some of the one's Ive found. Looking for comments on what you have used or other balancers.
Dorman OEM aftermarket replacement $70-85
Pioneer non SFI base model $120 part #872013 requires hub #872015
Pioneer SFI approved $175 part #872043 requires hub #872015
Auto Specialties $150 part #945800 (not sure what diameter or if it requires a new hub)
I ran into the same issue. My builder inspected the factory balancer and we decided to use it. Was in near perfect condition. We initially planned on using a Professional Products balancer, but we made the assumption we could get one for a Vette. All we found were for Fbody and other models; no corvette damper. Just clean yours up and check it closely for any cracking of the rubber. If you are not boosting with a supercharger it should be good for your application.
My assessment of the original was more of a "well used" part. The guy who built my short block also said I could stay with OEM. But, with it's assumed age I figured it's better to replace it than risk having it break under the increased hp and possible rpm range. I don't mind spending the $ to replace it but I don't think I need to go all out race parts.
The Pioneer parts are within my range to spend but I've read a couple of threads on here that suggest there have been problems with them. However, that can come from people passing on information that they simply read about. One person posts a complaint which leads to comments on other threads and so on. This very post is an example of that.
I used the ATI damper but wished that I had stayed stock. The ATI was a pain in the butt to install and if it ever needs to be removed I hope I don't have to lift the motor.
The two piece stock design makes it alot easier to remove and replace.

Yeah definitely not going ATI. But still wanted to go better than stock.
