Default 84 set/resume button

Does anyone know if the set/resume button at the end of the turn signal stalk is suppose to have a spring under the button? I have checked everything (vacuum lines, canister, switches under dash, fuse, and servo) all check out fine. The only problem I have found is the button at the end of the turn signal stalk. The button doesn't move at all. In other words, I press it and there's no "in" movement, nor any kind of "spring return" movement.

Just checked my 84. The button goes in about 1/4" and you can hear a click. It is definitely spring loaded. Your button might be stuck in in the off position.

I'm not sure what you mean by the button stuck in the off position. My understanding is the button is only used to set/resume the cruise control and once pressed and then released will return to the original position. The sliding switch on the stalk is the means for the on/off function. The only "click" I hear is from the servo when I slide the switch to the on position.
I measured the distance of the button to the end of stalk and it comes to .3035". Keep in mind there is a sort of notch at the end of the stalk (towards front of car) and I measured closest to the driver.
I'm still hoping someone will chime in who has physically seen a spring behind the button and perhaps I can locate one.
I have a feeling my only recourse will be to replace the entire stalk, of course I'm hoping to avoid that.

If you hold the button in you will coast,,,,let off the gas,,,Try to spray some cleaner behind it and see if it pops back out. Dirt from your hands can build up and make them stick.
