My car is a 1987, and I have most of the receipts for it. As far as I know, those headlight motors are factory, and everytime I flip the switch, I expect one to fail.
It hasn't happened yet, but I'm thinking about ordering new gears, because it has to be close.
The other night I turned the headlights on and noticed the drivers side was low...hmmm...I got out of the car and looked at it, and it was most of the way up, not grinding, not spinning, so I barely touched it, with the intent to push on it, but the touch broke it loose, and it snapped into place.
If your '87 has the three Nylon bushings like my '88, I'd say it's time to replace them. To check this out, try to move the headlight manually with the ****; if it turns for a while before the headlight starts to move it's time. If so, do both sides.
Agree, its time to replace the 3 white palstic bearings inside. I did mine 2 months ago, and it was easy. I followed the instruction found on the forum, and bought the plastic things from Eklers. I probably. wasted my money on the large gears, cause they were not worn, but that was the only way I could buy the bearings at that time, the bearings alone were on back order. My only caution, is to write down the order of the stainless washers, and that square metal piece. It also helps to rotate the manual opening **** to get to the torx bolt underneath. I bought multiple length torx bits, as well as a flex drive, to make the job go easier. I am a tool junky anyway. Mark the hood with a pencil before removal, makes the alignment a whole lot faster too.
84-87 motors did not have those bushings. Canyon, I rebuilt my motors. Not that hard to do. Got the large nylon gear from Ecklers for both motors. The small gear was fine in both motors. The large gear is what comes in contact with the armature gear and it wears the center of the large gear out over time because of the pee poor design. While you're in there it may not be a bad idea to clean up the contacts. And for good measure replace all 3 relays. They are cheap and known to fail.
