Default 383 cam question

Will I need a cam with a smaller base circle with my current 1989 L98 block when changing it to a 383?

Depends on rods, cam lobe that are used.Someone that has done some 383 setups im sure will chime in but im sure with the rite rod ull be fine with a standard base circle cam on a 383.
Im doin a 396 and will most likely have to use a .900 base circle cam esp with the lobe ill end up running.

You should be able to use a standard base circle cam. The block and oil pan will need some clearancing.

My 396 uses a standard base cam. The key is getting the right rods. I've got Crower Sportsman Stroker rods. They are a little pricey but quality usually is. They also require less clearancing on the block.

I am using an LT4 Hot Cam in my build. Not small base. I am also using stock rods. Won't do that again. Obviously they can be used but are a pain to fit.

Stock-size base circle used on my 383 build. It's got a Scat ProComp crank and 4340 5.7" connecting rods (pre-clearanced for strocker). The block was the only thing requiring clearance on mine.
