Fan come on when starting cold....?
When i start the car the can comes on rite away and once she starts she runs about 1500 for awhile some time she will step down to an 600-700 idle. But last time she would not step down and the sevice engine light come on and will slowly fade out or go out completly. Any ideas... can i do a jumper wire on the ADL to see what code is setting the service engine light.

Helps to put up your year model when asking questions so guys don't have to go looking to see what you have.
Many changes over the years so one size does not fit all
Usually a indication the computer is in "limp home" mode

You need to get out of your '60's Gasser and get up to speed .Things have moved on in the last 50 years
In a '86 the computer is the only thing that controls the fan.
The optional Aux fan in front of the radiator ( if fitted ) is standalone from a switch in the head
