First off the car is a 85. I am swapping in the ZZ4 long block with a 74219 cam and Superram base and runners. Now for some answers, I have a stock oil cooler on the car now. these things worth swopping over? My old harmonic balance just about rubbed a hole though the timing cover. That explains the rumble I would feel. Anyone have some info on a good after market balance? And guy that are running Air pump eliminator can you still pass emissions? And i hear that there are some tricks to make the Superam install easier?
I would consider ditching the oil cooler entirely and using synthetic oil.
Thats what GM did in 92...
As for the other things... hmmm... The air pump is hard to peg... you should be ok... if it gets close, use some smogcheck or the like to enrich the gas with chemicals that are sniffer friendly.
can't help ya with the balancer... don't know enough...
Superram tips: search the archives, but the biggest suggestions I've got:
1. Make sure the runners are tight and airtite to the manifold base
2. Slot the 12-pt bolt ends so that you can use a screw driver to pull them up from the bottom.
2a. Install all bolts on a subscetion before tigtening down.
3. retorque everything in sequence three times. As some bolts get tight, others won't be torqued anymore.
Vacuum leaks are a Superram's BIGGEST enemy, go slow and be thorough.
That said, I installed it on the stock motor to get the experience and you wouldn't BELIEVE the improvement it made to the stock motor. It had 98% of the down low torque that the old intake had, and blew past 4500 rpm and didn't stip really pulling til about 5800.
