wining noise from the power steering, only when its cold. makes no difference if wife is in the car or not. I have drained and replaced the fluid, use the recomended GM fluid ,made no difference. Now when the car warms up it will stop making the noise. Im sure a this point I need to replace either the pump or the rack but Im not sure which one. I would think this is a fairly common problem. Which one is it the pump or the rack..............its an '85..........thanks
If a GM pump has been run dry at some point in its life, they can whine. Usually worse when cold and being worked (steering) and usually quietest warm and not being worked. Different fluids can effect it a bit too with heavier fluids being worse.
Either way, as mentioned above, unless it is really annoying, just ignore it. I have had success on an older (GM pump but not a rack) using John Deere Hygard hydraulic oil. I switched to it on my JD because of hydraulic whine in the pump as it was suggested for both that and colder weather. It worked on the JD and worked on a Tahoe we owned. Can't speek for how it would do on yours.
........... Duct tape usually quiets unwanted noises in cars ... just a small piece over her mouth ... but I see your whining noise is there with or without her in it ........... good luck figuring out where to put the tape ................
