I have two questions that follow the next paragraph so hang in here.
Well, that is sure interesting ... I figured the hatch had a new seal because it is sooo tight to shut down. But I didn't figure it would be put on so poorly.
Some uninformed individual apparently used the wrong type glue and it never set. I discovered this when I was cleaning under the seal. Lucky for me, the glue used dissolves neatly with WD40.

I thought the seal was a one piece seal on 1990 Vette coupes. My current seal either started out as one piece and was cut at an angle to make the turn at the base of the targa band ... or they are two piece. Can anyone shed any information on this question?

What glue should I use to glue it the seal to the molding ? I guess if I use the right glue, the next guy that replaces it can just get some 3m seal glue release agent?
3)) bonus question !!
Any suggestions for cleaning those stubborn stains off the paint under the seal? 3M cleaner wax and WD40 on a paper towel are real slow going.
I have to disagree with Scorp on this one, They used a lithium type grease on the lip where the seal goes so it is free to move around some. No adhesive is used on this seal. Kind of off white - yellow tint grease looken kind of stuf. There is usually enough there after the old seal is taken off to just slide the new on back on. Thats all there is to it.
when i look at my seal from the side this is what I see
trunk side trim molding >>> T| D <<my seal
^ goop is in between seal and trim molding

I guess I'm not an ascii drawing kind of guy. Since I just replaced the one on my 87 it was one piece, and I know when I get the new one for my 89 it's going to be one piece also. And after talking to Corvette Rubber it just slides on, no sticky glue required, only alittle lithium grease in the weather strip channel that attaches to the body around the window. It don't take much and you usually don't have to put on any more grease, but since you cleaned yours off, you will now. This seal is made to move some on the body of the car. Hope this helps. Good luck. Or for your own piece of mind, look up Corvette Rubber on the net, or call 1-888-216-9412 and ask them about it, good people there.
