Default I need like instant help 1986vette

Okay so starting yesterday after school my car started to run a little rough I noticed because typically driving it would be around 11-15rpm and it was runnin at 19-26 ish which is unusual, and I didn't really feel a shifting at all because you usually feel the drop and it was gone. Today the same problem occured but in the morning, and now afternoon coming home, but coming home I started car and it like rpm'ed down to 0. I started it again and it was idling at 7 like usual but kept going down to 3,4,5 and stumbling back up. Driving it, it still had the 20rpm problem and I didn't feel shifts. And at stoplights where I had to break it was running down to like 3rPm and stumbling back up. Also while driving(it's an automatic) the upshift icon kept popping up and the service engine soon is on too.

Much thanks!
Also, what would suggestions be, and where is fuel/gas filter at/how do I get to it

I can help with the location of the fuel filter possibly. If it's in the same location as my 84 it will be on the passenger side and pretty easy to get to. You should be able to see it when you are underneath the car. Maybe someone else will chime in on the other problem.

The car will rarely start now, turning in and immediately rpm'ing to 0. Or goin for like 5 seconds and not letting me put any acceleration with gas pedal. So I was going downhill and it went off and I said "f*** it". Was able to pull into an old gas station and had to call AAA, now waiting

Sounds like part of the problem is your car isn't up shifting. I'd start by checking the trans fluid level.

I'm thinking it's a fuel pump problem or something along that nature. The guy before me had a problem where it didn't start, replaced the filter and started again. Also when I took of back plate and screwed around with the fuel pump cord, the car initially started again and let me drive after not startif for 10mins straight

I'd start by checking that code, and make sure your TV cable is adjusted right.

Fuel pressure is supposed to be 35-42 psi and it should hold up for at least 1/2 hr after ign is off or you have leaky injector/s or a defective check valve in the fuel pressure regulator. If fuel pressure is ok, then check for at least 1/2" snappy spark with a grounded wire brought close to an unplugged spark plug boot.

The fuel pump has a check valve to hold pressure too. In my opinion, it really isn't that important that pressure needs to hold for a 1/2 hour. I have a fuel pump that leaks down in 10 seconds and still provides enough fuel to run mid 10's with the afr that I command. Willie

I'd agree - as long as you know WHERE it is leaking down... had an old pickup that leaked down in the pump after about 10 min - just took a second to re-pressurize the rail then it runs fine so if you cranked it it took an extra 'round' or two of the engine before it fired.

As for the OP - I'd start by looking at the fuel pump / fuel pressure regulator and wiring to the pump (since it was mentioned) and make sure that the pressure is good when priming and while running - I'm guessing the pump is dying/died - after verifying with a gauge replace it and the filter while you're at it and I bet it'll be good to go.

hey Donald, I had an 86 can help you with the fuel filter and fuel pump if you want. they are both pretty easy. I am not great at diagnosing so I wouldn't want to replace parts that work. I usually follow the advice I get here and then replace the part. If you want some help, I am currently out of work and have a little experience. I live close by. Pm me if you want. I am dying to ride in a vette, still have not found my new one yet. good luck
