Default Old problem...new question Headlite motors

On early c4 motors, 84-87 with the 3 wire gear drive relay controlled, there are limit switches inside that the armature bumps one way or the other to stop itself and signal change of direction. The wire to one side has a glass bulb inline...one wire going in, one out.
What is this and what does it do? Is this a diode of some sort for the change in polarity?

Asking because I disassembled the motor to clean gunked up grease out that was causing sticky opening, and cleaned everything well, reassembled perfectly with the shaft spring in the right slot, breaker points cleaned and touching, commutator cleaned and brushes making good contact.

Its 180 degrees out of phase with the other headlight. Tried everything, connecting power with lites on/open, relay swap, you name it. Still wants to do the opposite of what the other does.
The shaft is free to slide and contact the points, and the ONLY questionable thing in there is this glass bulb...
I was hoping for some clarity before opening this motor AGAIN......

I've read all the threads here on the subject. Most are for 88 & up with bushings. Seems like I ran into this 20 yrs ago but cannot remember what the "fix" was...

TIA
