You might have to loosen both first just to find out that the latches are the problem.
This wins my vote for most likely problem. If the pins aren't centered within the "receiver" they land in, it can create drag upon reopening. If the drag is sufficient, it could overcome the spring's ability to pop the hood.
Make sure the pins are centered before replacing any parts. (Unless you just want to.)
I feel your pain Midnight - why would they be the only vendor that has this? What exactly gets upgraded with their kit? Is it something that can be homemade?
Thanks
Dave C
You can bet I am going to be doing some long hard looking at what else can be done without putting extra stress on the cables.
Guys, I just got an email from corvette recycling, they sold ALL their upgrade kits to another parts dealer. All I am going to say is why would they do that?? I wouldn't use that kit now if it was free. I am going to see what I can come up with tomorrow, I will post whatever I find.
they were selling the complete kit for $49 the others sell the parts for $49 each, the parts you need are the stronger springs and the pins, both are different and better quality then oem, everything else is just extra, I still have the extra parts in the box they came in cause they werent needed.
Gregg's right, my input is based on a properly aligned hood and associated components. What I'm talking about is a hood that had tired springs as they all will after a certain amount of time. If you store your car over Winter, release the hood. This relaxes the springs and may extend their life.
The kit I list in my paper was from GM and contained a new cable set, new latches, new release lever and new springs/pins. I used all the parts in the kit just because they were new. The GM part number is 10273994 and it is available from Corvette Central @ $109.95.

Thanks Ray, that makes me feel better knowing that someone else sells the kit. I'll check that out. It was looking like the kit was only available from one source and then they sold all they had to another company. I had already checked Corvette Central but probably didn't use the right words in the search.

this is excellent.....shame on you corvette recycling, for selling to a dealer.
Well guys, I was wrong. I claimed earlier that my latches were aligned perfectly and come to find out my passenger side was just a hair off center. I couldn't see it with grease as a marker so I used soapstone to color the tip of the pin. Sure enough, just a trace of white on one side. I adjusted it so all was clear and my hood now pops up at least an inch. I went ahead and replaced the assist too and now not only does the hood pop up but I can lift it halfway with one hand and it will go on from there by itself. So, 383vett, pcolt94, GREGGPENN, and Ray Quayle, you were all right about the alignment being critical, super critical. I'm sure glad I checked it out before spending all that $$$.
I would suggest that anyone with the "pop up" problem to take a little time and fine tune the aligment, it only has to be off about a sixteenth of an inch to hang up.

Great news, Chuck. Thanks for the update. The soapstone was a great idea for checking alignment.
Good idea about relaxing the springs over the winter Ray - but my car is 25 years old but only has 49k miles on it. That being said, the hood has probably been latched for longer stretches than most...
I'm going to try and align my pics next chance I get - thanks everyone!

Double thumbs up on this one- did this and greased the pins and seats ad it works perfect now!
