If you would like to spend your life time replacing your alternator, by all means buy one from Pep Boys with a life time warranty. You will be doing it every few months. Look at it this way, you will be able to swap alternators in under 5 minutes.
I have had it over 1 year, I think I got it installed in February 2001. It is chromed :D and I can't remember the cost but I'm sure it was much under $200.

I've got the pepboys lifetime warranty and seem to go through about one every 1 or 2 months.

Scorp is this true? Jeez.
I had a few go out on me in a short period of time. I was told it was because the lead wire was degraded. It had a high amount of resistence and was causing a lot of heat to build up in wire and alternator and killing it. This was almost 3 years ago and my alternator now is fine. Don't know for sure if it was this or if I just got a bad string of alternators? It was a long time ago and I didn't do the work myself, so unfortunately I can't explain it any better than this. Being out east if you drive in the rain or snow you might be kicking up a lot of salt onto the wires so maybe some have gone bad? Might be something to look into, though changing out an alternator is pretty dang easy.
Oh yeah, as to the original question. If you are doing it yourself just get one with a lifetime warranty. Like scorp said they are easy to change out. 5 minutes maybe.
The price isn't that big a deal between GM and autozone. GM was about 150 through Jeff Kopp (plus shipping on the alternator and the core return), and 120 from autozone. GM has a one year warranty, autozone lifetime. GM will do a lifetime warranty if they install, but then I'd have to pay full price at the local dealer (around 250, plus installation).
I'll look into that chrome one posted above, but the chrome would be lonely under there.
Decisions, decisions.......
You could get an Ice berg rebuild kit and rebuild the alternator. It comes with all the parts needed and a new rear case housing that is supposed to keep the regulator and diodes cooler. I think there maybe some soldering involved in the repair.
I went through 3 or 4 AC Delco's with only one being covered by the original warranty (less the $100 deductible). I bought my last one from Autozone when they still had a lifetime warranty on them. I had to replace it once. I think they don't offer the lifetime warranty anymore (you might want to check)but it's been almost three years now without any problems. Not bad since the Delco's were dying on me every year.
Hey Slow Joe, since when has the dealership given a lifetime warranty on anything, let alone the alternator? They've done mine several times and I paid every time except for the first, which was under the new car warranty. The third time I complained and all they did was give me 20% off of labor since they did the job less than one year ago. :mad
been there done that again and again and again.....I finally bought a 140 amp iceberg alternator, and it works much better. I also installed the airpump eliminator kit which moves the alternator away from the engine about 1 inch. So far all is well again. :seeya
I've got the pepboys lifetime warranty and seem to go through about one every 1 or 2 months.
That is unbelievable! I can't believe anyone would sell something that would require being replaced that much? That's got to be costing Pep Boys and arm and a leg.
HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOUR ALTERNATER IS GOING BAD?
I went to autozone and they said it was bad, then my mechanic tested it and said it was fine. Its charging at 14 volt give or take, but battery has died twice. Autozone checked both and said the battery was fine but the alt was bad. I think they have it backwards any thoughts?
GPAGADUAN, don't know how long they've been doing it, just know what they told me.
GONZO, if your alternator is putting out, and the battery keeps dying, I would guess your battery can no longer hold a charge and needs replacing.
In reference to the iceberg kit, everything I'm reading says it is for '87 and up, not available for my '85.
Next question, according to NAPA, for an '85, there was a 108 and 120 amp available. Mine has the 108. Any problem with going up to the 120?

Re: Dying alternator.. (SlowJoe)
No experience with the amperage change.
My experience and direction of late is as follows:
If you know anybody that has a boat, find out where they get their alternators rebuilt. Nobody buys new alternators for boats, they cost too much. Go to that guy and get yours rebuilt. Costs a little less, he will use good parts and all else being in reasonable condition that alternator has a chance of lasting a long time.
If a boat alternator ever quit like these auto store rebuilds, there would be linching parties, or worse. Something to consider.
