Re: Pulled my Radiator today (Vic'89)

How long has it been between cleanings? (serious question)
Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend, mine hasn't been cleaned since we got it a year ago. I'm afraid as to what I'll find
I had mine done when I was away once. My mechanic mentioned there was a LOT of crap(Sort of like yours) in there, and was surprised it ran as cool as it did.
Excellent pictures. Sure removes any doubt about just how much crap was in there! The original radiator in my '88 died about a year ago. It had never been removed prior to being replaced. The end tank had been dribbling a little coolant for several months before I finally replaced the radiator. That coolant was accumulating along the bottom support. From there the coolant was being absorbed by the trash (leaves, cigarette butts, paper, etc.) and turning everything into one big slimy blob. :U I measured the area that was blocked by the blob. In terms of area, 20% of the radiator was completely blocked off from air flow.
Now I'm wondering if I should clean it every year, every other year or what? There must be some effective reliable way of preventing trash from getting sucked into that space.

Was that a diaper in there... Must have been the sock.
Did mine during the engine mods and found a good portion of that stuff, not that bad though.
You can get some insulation for A/C units at a local hardware store and close that gap below the radiator to keep items from entering through the crack. This will ensure that it stays clean.
I opted not to bother since my car is not a daily driver. But if it was I definately would have done that.
If it only took you an hour to clean then Mr. Maggo, your eyes must be really bad :D
I can just imagine the crap blocking your radiator fins....little pebbles, grit, etc. :U
It took me about 8 hours off and on last summer to clean my radiator fins and I didn't have nearly any debris stuck around my radiator like you had :bb
OK, I just did mine and man, it looked worse than yours.:( I removed sand, salt, leaves, plastic bags, at least 10 lottery tickets, newspaper, candy wrappers, etc. I also did the TB bypass and added a 160* T-stat. Unfortunately, the car doesn't run that much cooler, I'm hoping I have an air pocket somewhere.

Actually the radiator fins were not that bad. I just hosed them down a few times. Everything has been reinstalled, but I need to add the coolant tomorrow morning and go for a test drive.
The funny thing is that my car never ran hot, about 170 degs on the parkway.
