It sounds like the floats on the fuel sender are stuck or you need to replace the whole fuel sender. It happened to me and i replaced the Fuel sender and fuel pump. Just be careful if you do decide to replace it, the bolts that on sender on the gas tank tend to rust and mine all snapped. Then i had to drop the gas tank... It wasn't fun.. But it definitely sounds like the floats are stuck.
seems stuck, I filled up Friday drove about 100mi and it still shows at the full mark...can't be that good on gas, any ideas? Thanks
There is a possibility the wiper and or coil on the sender is oxidized. If the resistance goes to high the gauge will just find a place and hang there. It does not operate like the old analog gauges where high resistance would make it read empty, this is different. I would first try to clean up the contact areas and see if that corrects the problem. This thread has some good help to do the job.
Thanks, I'll try to clean the contact areas, I noticed on the way home from work it did come down about 1/8 then at a stop it went back up to the full mark.
Put in a bottle of Chevron with Techron Fuel Injector Cleaner, GM recommended this for years. The sulfur in the fuel builds up on the contacts and this can happen. Try this first before spending big money on a new sender. This is very common, contrary to popular belief our fuel stinks. Buy Top Tier Fuel if you can. Sunoco, BP, Shell, etc...tend to have better fuel. Top Tier is the way to go, if it is in your area.

after 2 Techron treatments and mine is back to normal
10-4 on the odometer...if 1 bottle doesn't do the trick should I wait 3000 mi before I add another bottle? I don't want to mess up my FIC injectors...
There is probably nothing wrong with the gauge if it did eventually move. When you fill up or 'top-off' a fuel tank (especially Vettes)you have to consider the upper most portion of the tank as extra fuel that the gauge does not see. The digital display trip-meter still reads it and adjust for the milege but the gauge might give you quite a few miles before dropping 1 bar or moving the needle, whichever you have. You will drive as much as 100 miles before the fuel level drops enough for the gauge to react. Because the gauge is designed not to react to small changes in the level, the first miles won;t make it move.
What has been said about the fuels of today leaving a layer or film deposit on the sender unit is quite true...also the amount of alcohol in todays fuel allows it to hold more water and that too causes corrosion on the sender assy.
Techron is the usual and most effective "fix" and just a good idea for fuel system maintinence. It won;t do anything to your new BoschIII injectors except keep them clean.
Hey thanks leesvet, come to think of it I did top it off...I pulled the lever on the fuel nozel 3 or 4 times when it hit the full mark, so maybe your right, I bought the techron so I will add it in the am. Many thanks to all, again this place rocks....
You said it, and it is a pet peeve of mine. DO NOT TOP OFF FUEL TANKS. When the pump shuts off it is full leave it alone. The tank needs expansion room and for the EVAP system to work properly. Rounding to the next whole dollar or what you got in change, if you are paying cash is ok. I have seen people keep topping off the tank to the point the charcoal canister is full of liquid fuel. By this time, it is junk. Then they wonder why they smell gas around their car.
