I replaced all the bushings on my 86 with the poly graphite. It tightened up the car real well. I used performance suspension.

I've been planning on doing my bushings for a while now. How difficult of a job is it? Any special tools required? How long did it take you guys to do? Thanks!

I did the rear bushings, u-joints, bearings, shocks, and brake pads, in one day. The front bushings, shocks, upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, and brake pads in two evenings , one evening per side.

I put the car up on 4 jack stands.

The front passenger side upper is the hardest. The Idler pulley must be removed and the air conditioner canister un mounted so you can mover the a/c hoses out of the way. you do not need to disconnect the a/c hoses.

I have an arbor press, a ball joint/ u-joint press, and a tie rod end seperator. You will also need several metric wrenches/sockets larger than 18mm

Since mine is an 86, the upper ball joint rivets had gaulded to the aluminum upper control arms so I had to drill them out. Most of the time you can just grind off the heads of the rivets and press them out.

how about a spring compressor? is one needed, or can you release the tension of the spring safely?

fiddleplayer is right on with the process. You don't need a spring remover. A floor jack can be used to decompress the rear spring. I got a shock when the rear spring bolts were removed. They has started to corrode just above the threads so they were replaced. On my car, the back bushings were very worn and loose. The front bushings could have been left alone but the lower ball joints were worn. PST sells a complete kit and the price can't be beat. www.p-s-t.com

I double checked when I got home and I used P-S-T on the front also. I bought the whole kit for the front. Everything fit well. You should go ahead and do the swaybars at the same time. They will have to know the diameter of both the front and the rear. The sway bar bushings are sold seperately. I had a little trouble with the ends of the sway bars though.

can this be done without a ball joint press and an arbor press........i am not familiar with these tools...if not are the expensive and where can i get them. Also, do you need to align your car after you do this?

thanks

an alignment is highly recomended, since you had everything apart, and with the new bushings you are for sure off the old alignment.

you will need some heavy tools, like the press, but i'm sure ther is an alternative method :), if you are careful.
i would say you do not need the ball joint press, but the seperator for sure helps a lot

I bought them all from harbor freight. It's not professional quality but it got the job done. The arbor press, balljoint press, and the tie rod seperator were all together around $100. Too bad you're not in Dallas, you could use mine. Having the right tools makes the job go easier and faster.
