Default '96 Radio Dead From Jump Start?

I just purchased a '96 with the Bose CD/Cassette/Stereo. Everything, as far as I know, works, with the exception of the stereo. The prior owner said it worked fine until he jump-started the car. Seems like I read in a thread that you have to make sure the stereo is off before jumping it, but I could not find the thread.

Any ideas what could be wrong? I checked the two fuses labelled radio, and they seem fine. Thanks.

Reverse polarity on the dead battery when jumping the car can damage the radio if the radio was turned on. Turned off, the radio can't be harmed by jumping the car to start it. Always use an ohmeter to check fuses, they have much better eyesight.

I know that some radios have a security code that needs to be entered after they have been without power. If this is the case for your radio the dealer should be able to get the code for you.

Great quote, and accurate. I put an ohmeter on the two radio fuses (after your insight), and they check out.

The security code thing is interesting, accept I do not know where I would enter it? The radio does not power on at all.

From searching dozens of threads, the CDM is probably the culprit.

My shop manual has not shown up yet, so does someone have a link showing which wires in and out are power, etc.? I would like to try sending juice to the antenne and stereo to see if they are functioning.

Thanks.

As far as I know, there is no security code feature on the '96 Corvette radios.
There is no mention of it in the owners manual.

My 92 radio died after I changed the battery. I think its the CDM. Still haven't fixed it.

I'd be surprised (and very disappointed) if it was damaged due to a jump start. I did underhood electronics design for a lot of years, and we had to design the components to withstand reverse battery and 24 volt jump start. I can't believe the guys in the radio lab next door would have such relaxed specs that the design couldn't handle a common jump start. Unless it was an hour long 24v jump start on a 95* day, I can't believe the radio would be that susceptible.

I do think it is odd, but that is what the prior owner told me. With the "Notice" in the Owners Manual stating during a jump start "If you leave your radio on, it could be badly damaged. The repairs wouldn’t be covered by your warranty.", it seems possible.

Still have not received my shop manual yet, so if someone has the wiring diagrams to the CDM, it would be appreciated.

You said you checked 2 fuses. Make sure they were #4 and #40. As said, check the fuse with an ohm meter. Then turn key to ON and pull both fuses 4 & 40. Then measure with a voltmeter on each terminal on the fuse block for each fuse for 12 volts on one of the terminals. If you have voltage on one terminal for each fuse, then you can move forward and away from fuse links, maxi fuses and all that stuff. Put fuses back in and all voltage measurements are in regard to ground, (you may have to find one).

You have mentioned the antenna does not goes up or down. Because there is a third fuse that is for the antenna and also supplies the 12 volts for the amplifiers in the speaker enclosures. Check fuse # 37, 20A fuse.

If the radio shows a frequency when turned on but there is no sound, fuse 37 could be the problem.

Last but not least check the Bose power relay which is on a cable harness by the tuner which is in the compartment behind the passenger. I would at least reseat and check connections there.

Fuses 4, 37 and 40 are all good, and around 12 volts are come from each.

Radio shows no sign of power (displaying frequency, etc.).

I believe you are correct on the connections, and I think the prior owner was full of it or it was a coincidence with the jump.

My shop manual finally arrived today, and I went through the trouble shooting procedure. Power to the CDM was good, yellow wire good. Then I notice on the next connector, a red/white wire (power) was not connected, then also the ground wire. Both had corroded off. The red/white had even corroded the terminal off the CDM!

Any ideas where I can get connectors to splice in, as well as the terminals for the CDM?
