Default Need help removing hush panel

I would sure appreciate some guidance here. I appears that I may have an ignition switch actuator problem with my '88, and need to lower the steering column. How do I remove the drivers side hush panel? Probably right in front of me, but I can't figure it out. How is it fastened?
Many thanks for any advice.

If you're referring to the carpeted panel, there are trim screws where
the edge of the dash meets the carpeted panel. One on the side end of the dash,
one on each side of the steering column.

There are two holes in the carpet. One on each side of the steering column about
in the middle of the carpet. You need to use a 1/2 socket with an extension to
remove the two bolts that are recessed behind the carpet. The bolts are at
about a 135 degree angle.

Before you drop the steering column, at the base of the steering column where it goes thru the firewall are some bolts or studs. If you don't loosen or remove them before you drop the column, you will bend the metal plate that's attached to the steering column.

So I have to peel the carpet off to get to them. That's what I was missing.
MANY THANKS!

No you don't peel the carpet off.

Once the trim screws and two hidden/recessed bolts are removed, the panel comes off with the carpeting attached to it. There are two holes in the carpeted panel to access the bolts.

On mine, there were no holes in the carpet (although I will cut them upon reassembly); I had to peel the carpet off to get to them. No biggie.
Thanks for the heads up on loosening the firewall bolts. How do I get the tilt lever off? Does it just unscrew?

Yes it unscrews. If you look at it there are some flat spots on it where you can put a small wrench on it if necessary.
