It may sound like a stupid question, but I am going to ask the experts before I do possibly something stupid...: hide:
Will it make a difference if I remove the catalytic converters on my 86 C4?
I don't think it will hurt anything, but I am new to the Vette thing and make sure it would effect anything as far as timing, the way it runs or anything else....
Sorry again for a stupid question, but all of you know more about it than I do..
I have a perm/ tag on it and it will not have to be inspected again...
Don't throw your old Catalytic Converters in the garbage or trash because they are worth $$ to the right recycling guy.
I have sold old plugged up Cats in my area for $50 - $150.
And this guy I sell them to has to take them in a recycling center in Chicago.
He is making more $$$ yet.
Platinum inside.
Japanese Catalytic Converters are worth the most per pound.
They have Rhodium metal inside.
I was given $80.00 cash for a CAT off a 1993 Honda Civic 4cyl 2 years back.
It was tiny, about 1/2 the size of an old 2-1/2" Cherry Bomb Glasspack muffler.

Wow.. really I didn't know that..... I was going to leave them at the shop... I will take them for sure.. Thanks for the info..
Aftermarket CATS are worthless to sell.
They little or no platinum or rhodium inside.
OEM Cats are worth $$$$$
I'm sure they are OEM.. There isn't, but 50,543 mile on the car & it wasn't taken care of very well until I picked up... So far I only have 750.00 in it... It would be nice to make a little cash off the CCs to buy items for the interior...

People wonder why aftermarket CATS are typically less than OEM, this is why. They don't work as well, less platinum, palladium, and rhodium=less efficient CAT.

If original,
Take a look 1st.
On the aluminized tin heat shields of your Cats on your C4,
They will say or be stamped "AC".
They are on my 1987 VERT.
When I drop my 410sbc in I will lose all 3 CATS.
Have muffler elimantors right now on the car.
Runs decent enough for now.
150 + top end with ease.
I have made an extra few $$$thousand dollars or so in 2008 when times were real bad in the USA for all especially for an Auto Mechanic like myself.
I collected old CATS off of cars & trucks that had plugged CATS.
I installed the new replacement Catalytic Converters.

Oh thanks for any info/help
It will not make a big difference. My 86 has an 85 front pipe modified to mount an 86 style cat. The magnaflo cat works just fine with NO appreciable power loss.
If you want more noise, install a cam. Now that will make a difference!
I was just asking if would matter in the way it ran If I remove them... I can smell a slight scent of one, that make me think one may be clogging up on me, so I thought I would just take them off... I wanted to make sure it wouldn't hurt the performance more than I was hoping it would help it..

I doubt it would make any real difference. I don't remember what the stock configuration is but I believe the O2 sensor is further upstream and near to the exhaust manifold. Also there is no sensor after the cat like the LT engines so I can't see how that would hurt
