1991 coupe auto . I started to replace module in dist. When I started to remove cap I found that po had broken one of the cap hold down screws off in the dist. Looks like he attempted to drill it out but was unsuccessful . It had been running fine before I tore into it to replace injectors . Should I leave it alone or remove dist to drill out or maybe just replace the darn thing ?

I can tell you this it will run forever with no problems. Had one break at the shop. Truck had to go and could not get one fast. That truck ran when it left for better places 5 years latter. Not saying to do it but pretty common problem.

I just replaced the distributor in my 86 to a small cap one. Nothing wrong with the old one. It has new cap and rotor. If you can use it, let me know.

After rethinking this for $300 times I would run the broken one until I was sure it was not doing its job.

It's an aluminum housing. Try removing it and go from there.

I would certainly have it replaced. Get the small cap one so that if you ever run a HSR you can have it already in place. Very simple fix.

If you simply zip tie it, it will work too. However, it can cause a problem later on in life and it will usually be in the middle of BFE and you will see the weird kid in Coveralls sitting on the swing plucking the banjo.

Default basic law

three (3) points determine a plane.

additional points are redundant at best.

normally i find one of the four screws obscured by the cowl seal and just leave it loose, never had a problem...but if you're one of 'those' who only checks under the hood once every ten years, get another dizzy with 4 screws.

Then why does a bellhousing have 6 bolts.

Default extractor bits

Get a bolt extractor kit from Sears or possibly an autoparts store or if you have connection to a Snap On or Mac tool sales person. Extract in and install rotor cap with 4 screws. Not going to say for sure it would happen with only three screws, but could leak just a small amount of moisture inside the cap and it will start to corrod your connections to the coil and your plug lead connectors under the cap that are metal. Do it right and repair and run it the correct way.

How about drilling it out and helicore? Is there a helicore that small? IDK since I only saw my OEM distributor for less than a few minutes before I tossed it.

It can be drilled out & chased with the correct tap.

Tricky to do.
Has to be removed the car & set up in a vise mounted to a workbench.

I have done it dozens of times with a GM HEI hold down screws for the Distributor cap.
Takes patience & skill drilling out broken bolts & screws.
I do it at least 50 times a month.
I drilled out 5 broken bolts last week.

Midwest rust belt vehicles.

Your labor is free. lol

That is a thought, but not sure if they have helicoils that small, and would be a very tedious install at that. Hopefully he played alot of Operation as a youngster; the board game not his girlfriends.

Good sharp pilot drill of 1/16" is key.
Along with a dab of 80-90W gear oil on the drill bit.
Or even better Machinist cutting/ lubricating oil.

If you are successful, you will save yourself $300.00.

If the last guy really made a mess of trying to drill out the broken distributor cap screw,

Flip the distrib. upside down in the vise & drill from the bottom.

Each screw runs clean through the bottom.

I have had to drill them out at times like this too.
