Before you start pulling things apart, try this: Dribble some light oil down the antenna and then turn radio on and off a few times. Worked for me, and still fine 2 years later. If that doesn't work, it's likely the ribbon which needs replacing.

You have to pull the antenna motor, to repair.

I had the same problem with my '86 Coupe. I purchased the mast and rod replacement from Zip and fixed it. The rod was broken in two places. It allowed the antenna to go up but not down. Despite the articles saying it is an easy job, it is not. Even with the wheel and inner fender off, there is not much room to work with.
