Perhaps I don't understand the function of knock sensors, but don't they prevent knock by retarding timing. Therefore the consequence of using low octane fuel would be loss of performance due to timing retard, not pinging. If pinging or knocking becomes noticeable doesn't that mean your knock sensors are not working.

93 octane here...always... and if I have the extra cash on hand....I shoot down to Shell and get the 94 stuff....
