Default Rear View Mirror lights

My 85 has no lights on the rear view mirror, thus no wiring

I bought a 1997-2004 rear view mirror that has two map lights on it.

Can I wire the two lights so they come on when the door is opened, and switch on or off by the mirror switch while driving, do I need a relay etc?

Can I tap into the wiring on the Courtesy lamps?

I did this also and tapped into the footwell lights. Color for color (white, black, and orange wires if I remember correctly) splice/tap. Works as you would expect.

That should be very doable without a relay. You'd really just need run 3 wires up or over to the new mirror: a fused 12 volt (+) wire (goes to one of the legs of the lamp bulb sockets) and 2 grounds (one goes directly to/from the map light switch to a fixed grounding point and the other goes to the grounding wire for the courtesy timer). Wire the map light switch(es) in series between the lamp(s) for directly grounded wire for manual light control.

You should be able to figure out the new mirrors wiring pretty easy with continuity/ohm meter or a 12 volt source (best to be fused). If you can't figure the mirror circuits out I'll see if I can dig up one of my C5 FSM to help you along.

thanks guys, I am certain that I can mount this mirror in the same position the 85 mirror is, I just have to re-shape the mount foot on the C5 mirror and it will be good to go.

Looks like there are 3-wires from the mirror, 1=black / white striped (for 12v) and two black wires (grnd),

I assume,,,,
the black/white an go to the sun visor 12v power
one black wire can go to the sun visor ground ,,,
one black wire an go to the Timer Delay switched BLACK ground under the dash

sound right?

Wow, a $25 investment for a used mirror yields a mirror with map lights,,, and no spotted view of faded glass,,,

I have not wired it in but I have mounted it and tested it, I will wire it Saturday

Wiring sounds right just have to figure out which ground has the switches inline.

Got mine from an f-body if I remember correctly. Foot had to be "massaged" also but a great improvement.
