I'm not sure exactly what it is, but I was thinking it was a 4 speed with 3 overdrives. But is it on manual cars or auto's? Also how does it engage the gears, and can someone show me a pic of the shifter?
The 4+3 is a manual transmission. It has a 4-speed Borg Warner Super T-10 transmission, and a 2-speed automatic bolted to the back of it.
You have 7 gears to choose from.

2nd/OD

3rd/OD

4th/OD
The shifter is nothing special. It is your everyday 4-speed shift patter with reverse in the upper-left. 84-85 Early models have a rocker switch on the center console to turn the OD program on and off. 85L-88 models have the switch actually in the top of the shifter. You press the shift pattern to turn the OD program on and off.
then OD automatically engages in 2nd gear/3rd gear/4th gear when in the right rpm range?
You got the idea! :)
Also for certain years (84, 86-88) if you stand on the gas it will automatically downshift out of overdrive for full acceleration. It's really handy on the highway or playing with other drivers. :reddevil
