My transmission is wrecked in my '87 and I want to replace it either with a rebuilt transmission or buy a used one from somebody. Can I use a transmission out of an '86 since it is also a L98 or are their differences?

Your 87 C4 has the better transmission to use & rebuild Vs. the 1986 C4 trans.
Many internal upgrades were made in 1987 by GM Hydromatic & Corvette engineers.
Auxillary valvebody engineered into the mid year ( Feb/March 1987) was a very big improvement.
No more gear change banging from reverse to drive like earlier 700r4 transmisions did.
Has a heavy duty 16 element input sprag.
Recalibrated valvebody.
New & improved input drum, steels, forward clutch, over run clutch,
& 3-4 clutch.
Many other changes in 1987 carried over to the later C4 700R4's too.
