I want to paint my rims black. They are stock 89 rims. I read the posts on how to strip the clear coat and have bought aircraft stripper. Now what? What is the best type of brush to use when stripping them? Because I want to paint them do I just take off the clear coat or do I need to prep them in another way also? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Painting Rims (Tim89)
I would recommend contacting your local automotive paint dealer and get written instuctions from one of the major paint manufacturers. I like PPG Detron but the other companies make great products also. You want to make sure you use the same brand.
The questions is after you strip the clear coat, what are the next steps. From my exprerience, you need to make sure 100% of the stripper is off the bare metal, then scuff/sand the surface, apply a primer/sealer designed for aluminum with a urathane color coat. Apply the color coat and shoot a clear on top even if you paint them black. Lots of work.
I found a shop to do the painting for me after I took the clear coat off but wasn't sure if the dull surface is actually paint that needs to be stripped also of if thats the material of the rim. Thanks for the reply.
