Hey everybody, I've got a 94 LT1 vette, 6 spd. man. My starter began acting up last week, hesitating to start. Well, today I went to turn off and the starter came on and would not stop. I put it in 1st gear (it's a manual) with my foot on the brake, thinking it might stall out but it didn't . instead my clutch started to smoke pretty bad. I then put it neutral with emergency brake on and disconnected the battery cable. Do I need to do a starter replacement or the solenoid or what? I know that I have to jack it up and go from under to pull it. I would appreciate feedback. thanks,
Jason
I would look at the ignition switch on the bottom of the column to see if it is loose , defective or if the linkage is a problem. That may cause the starter to energize uncontrollably.
If the contacts in the solenoid were bad, it may cause a hesitation in the starter to engage. But how would the contacts close on its own with no voltage applied to the solenoid.
Remove the solenoid wire, then connect the battery and see if there is voltage on the wire with the ignition switch off, on, but not in the start position. Monitor the voltage, move the ignition switch (and key) and see if any voltage appears. If it does the switch is bad. That would confirm or eliminate the switch.
Another possibility is a very flaky start relay or CCM that would cause the starter to energize.
once I got the starter out I took apart the solenoid and clean up the whole insides, wire brushed the contacts and made sure the plunger was greased and it seemed to move up and down without any sticking. got it all put back together as the rain began to come down. I will drive it tomorrow and see how it goes. I should check the ignition switch tomorrow as well. will post back.
