I read somewhere that when your master is leaking through the warning switch, it can be rebuilt instead of a new one being purchased. My Master Cylinder leaks from the rear res to the point that I'm keeping a bottle of brake fluid in the car. Is there an outlined reason or procedure on how to fix this?
I unfortunately don't have a FSM. I've done well keeping the car running without it so far, so I've been trying to conserve money since I'm paying my way through college.
Sounds like the rear seal is gone. If one seal is bad, then all should be replaced at the same time. I've rebuilt the m/c on both 89's. It's not that hard if you're careful with your box wrenches while removing the brake lines (if you don't have flare wrenches) and follow the instructions in the rebuild kit.
I double checked the usual suspects, i.e, RockAuto, AutoZone, NAPA, and Advance Auto, and it seems that a rebuilt m/c unit is cheaper now than the m/c rebuild kit so the choice is up to you. Since you're on a budget, the rebuilt unit looks like a better deal for a quick weekend project.
Got me a Cardone rebuilt MC from Advance Auto, where the clerk told me it was "Too damn expensive" and that I could get one from an '87 truck for practically $15, so he discounted the price on the one I was buying Excellent trip to Advance Auto
