The car runs great, then with no warning, it will just shut off while driving. It will start back up after a few attempts, but I can't figure out what is wrong. I would say it seems like a coil/ICM issue, but it did the same thing before I just replaced them both with new units.
Has anybody seen this before?
Car specs:
96 LT1, auto
Things that have been replaced the past 2 months:
Coil
ICM
Fuel pump/internal wiring harness
fuel filter
MAF
I also replaced the opti with a dynaspark unit 2 years ago and had my transmission rebuilt over a year ago.
Questions, did you have this problem before, during or after you replaced all those parts within the last two months? I'm assuming that you replaced those parts because of the problem but need that clarified. Does the engine quit instantly like turning of the ign switch or does is hesitate, sputter or backfire before stalling? We need to establish if it acts like a fuel or spark problem first. Being able to monitor a remote fuel pressure guage with these type of intermittant problems helps eliminate some possibilities.
Yep, that is why I replaced those parts. I'm not a fan of replacing parts just to do so, but all of them were pretty old and I was going to replace in the near future anyway.
My first thought when it happened was that it was ignition related, so I replaced both the coil and the ICM, then when that didn't fix it, I went to the fuel side of things and did the pump/filter.
I do have a gauge that I can put on and see if I can get anything from that.
I know this car like the back of my hand and I'm stumped on this one....
it won't throw a code every time it stalls, but today it did. It was just a "manufacturers ignition misfire" 0372 I think, but not 100% sure on that. So this morning, I drove it on the highway for about 15 miles, everything was fine, then it stalled. I pulled over, started it back up and it started, I revved it a little, then it died. I let it sit for 10 seconds, started it up, revved it, it all seemed good so I went back on the highway and got to work with no issues. I just can't mimic the problem. Its happened going up a hill under acceleration, coasting downhill, 70 mph with light highway driving...there seems to be no rhyme or reason which is what gets me???
It did the same thing on the way home. Something I did notice was right before it shut off, I was accelerating a bit. it shut off, I pulled over and tried starting it right away. it started right up and as soon as i hit the gas, it shut off again. I let it sit for a few seconds and just started it without touching the gas and it started right up. I let it idle for a few seconds, revved it a little bit to make sure it would shut off again and then I gingerly went back on the highway cruising at about 65 mph and made it home without any other problems.
Something else that strikes me as odd....My air conditioning all of a sudden wouldn't work today either? Coincidence, or some weird wiring problem? ahhhhh, I hate this stuff
