1990 c4. alt and bat both passed. replaced the ignition module still did the same after it warmed up. after i wait till it cools down i cant start up again. can a bad fuel pump cause this.
not that it's hard to replace the FP... I would pick up the fuel pressure tester... they are not very much.... and you will know your pressure... and know what's going on
You ALWAYS do diagnosis when the problem exists!!!!!!! Engines require spark, fuel, air, and compression in order to start and continue to run. You have to find out which of these vital components quits when the engine gets warm. See if there are any stored error codes. Use a timing light to see if you have spark. Pull a plug wire and bring a grounded wire close to the boot while someone cranks, you should have a snappy at least 1/2" spark. Measure the fuel pressure, it should be 35-42 psi and it should hold up for at least 1/2 hr ign off or you have leaky injector/s or a defective fuel pressure regulator. Use a noid light to see if you are getting injector pulses. Spray starter fluid into the intake and see if the engine will start and if it does, you have a fuel delivery problem.
Hi the fuel pump relay can be disabled by the oil pressure sensor/connector if it has come off. The fuel pump will run
(and ignore oil pressure) when first starting the car and if there is no oil pressure or sensor connector has come of will turn pump off. I had this happen on my vette, the big oil pressure sender facing up(on block behind distributor) goes to your gauges. There is a smaller pressure switch that is horizontal facing driver side just below the large sender. Check it is connected. You can also test the fuel pump runs via the acl connector, or when you first turn ign on and not start car the pump will run a few seconds and stop as it has not sensed oil pressure.
Good luck !

As long as the ECM is receiving reference pulses from the distributor, the ECM will keep the fuel pump relay closed. You can have an oil pressure switch failure and never find it out.

not exactly, gerard. the oil pressure switch is BACKUP for another FP relay if the usual relay fails. it "allows" the pump to operate, if the pump relay is out of circuit.
if ecm has not sensed oil pressure the engine still runs, if fp relay and fp are ok.
the switch does not "stop" anything. check some recent posts and verify for yourself.
joe
if ecm does not see pulses from dist it will shut fp relay off after 2 secs. nothing to do with oil pressure. THE WAY I UNDERSTAND IT. BEEN WRONG BEFORE.
